Acacia Board Grades: Key Features

When selecting materials, it is essential to understand the differences between grades, which are defined by natural defects, colour uniformity, and texture.

  • Extra Grade. Selected timber of the highest quality. The board surface is clean, free from knots, cracks, or sapwood. The colour is uniform, ranging from greenish-yellow to golden-brown. It is used for elite furniture, facades, and premium parquet where a flawless appearance is paramount.
  • 1st Grade. The “golden mean” that balances technical performance with the natural characteristics of the wood. Healthy (“live”) light knots of small diameter (usually up to 10–15 mm) firmly fused with the wood are permitted. Slight colour variations that highlight the natural origin of the material are also acceptable. 1st-grade boards are used for worktops, staircases, furniture panels, and other items where wood texture and high strength are valued.
  • 2nd Grade. Timber suitable for Loft, Country, or Rustic styles. It is characterised by colour variations (sharp transitions from the dark heartwood to light sapwood). Dark and black knots of any size, healthy sapwood, and micro-cracks that do not compromise the board’s integrity are permitted.

Acacia Timber: Main Characteristics

Acacia (Robinia), also known as the locust tree, is widespread in the subtropical and tropical latitudes of Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. It is the hardest of the broad-leaved trees and has a developed root system, allowing it to thrive in arid areas.

There are about 1,300 varieties of acacia. The tree grows up to 30 m in height, with a trunk diameter reaching 1.5 m. Acacia is a fast-growing species; a plant can reach 4.5 m just three years after planting.

Acacia timber is notable for its multidirectional structure. The fibres are arranged against each other, ensuring the elasticity and density of the solid wood. The natural material is resistant to friction, so strict adherence to technology is required when processing dry acacia board. Small to medium-sized pores are visible on a smooth cut. The colour scheme is dominated by light yellow and dark brown tones.

The solid wood withstands significant mechanical loads and is resistant to moisture, fungi, and mould. Acacia timber products are used in bathrooms and kitchens. However, it is important to understand that the surfaces of shelves, cabinets, and worktops must be pre-treated with special impregnations and varnishes. Acacia is also highly decorative. The distinct wood pattern can be made even more expressive with stains, oils, waxes, and varnishes.

Joinery Acacia Board: Applications

Due to its hardness and density, acacia is frequently used for flooring, wall cladding, and the production of doors, window frames, and staircase elements. The following types of floor and wall coverings are produced from solid wood:

Furniture Board This edged board is used in joinery and the furniture industry. Furniture made from solid acacia can serve for generations. Furniture boards are used to create shelves, bookcases, chests of drawers, cabinets, side tables, desks, and other furnishings.
Parquet Board A popular flooring option consisting of three layers. The base is rigid moisture-resistant plywood, the middle layer is softwood battens, and the face layer uses valuable or decorative timber. Solid acacia is often used for the top layer. Treated with wax, oil, or varnish, natural wood withstands significant mechanical stress. Parquet board is chosen for its textured wood pattern, ease of installation, and reliable connection (lock type or tongue-and-groove).
Floor Board Solid floor boards are considered a premium covering. While standard edged board for flooring is available on the market, tongue-and-groove acacia boards are more practical for installation. The tongue (ridge) along the perimeter facilitates laying and allows for a smooth surface without gaps.
Decking Board (Terrace) The market offers decking boards made of natural, impregnated, heat-treated wood, and WPC (wood-polymer composite). Key differences include:

Natural decking: Made from exotic or coniferous species. The resins in the wood serve as a moisture barrier, but additional treatment with special substances is needed for full weather protection. The surface is usually grooved to prevent slipping.

Thermo-treated decking: Contains no more than 4% moisture. After drying in an autoclave and steam treatment, the board becomes moisture-resistant, dense, and resistant to mould and temperature changes.

Impregnated board: Resistant to UV, moisture, temperature fluctuations, and mould. The timber acquires these qualities after “soaking” in an antiseptic solution. The special agent fills the pores, significantly improving performance.

Composite decking: Consists of crushed wood, binding polymers, modifiers, and other additives. WPC decking maintains a stable shape and withstands precipitation, significant temperature changes, and mechanical loads.

Decking Board (Ship/Deck) Deck boards are the right choice for verandas, pool areas, garden paths, and patios. Unlike terrace decking, ship decking has a smooth surface and bevelled edges. Special end treatment minimizes the expansion/shrinkage of floorboards with changes in temperature and humidity levels.
Scandinavian Board Facade boards are made from natural timber. This cladding technology originated in Sweden. Scandinavian (Swedish) board is manufactured by planing the workpiece on three sides, leaving the face side rough. The surface with unsanded pores is primed and painted. The primer and paint penetrate the pores better, ensuring the coating lasts longer.

Dry Planed Acacia Board: Finishing Options

In interior design, cladding materials imitating natural wood are popular. Vinyl or laminated boards imitating the acacia pattern are durable and safe.

For connoisseurs of genuine material, decorative acacia board offers distinct beauty. To reveal the wood’s potential, we use:

  • Toning. Stains, waxes, oils, and varnishes make the annual ring pattern contrasting or bleached.
  • Ageing. Special agents create an antique or retro look.
  • Brushing. Brushed boards suit Retro, Shabby-chic, Vintage, Country, and Provence interiors. The technology involves “combing” the timber surface with a stiff brush. Soft fibres are removed, highlighting the annual ring pattern.

Characteristics of Edged and Unedged Acacia Board: Manufacturer’s Overview

Acacia lumber occupies a unique market niche due to its extreme hardness (exceeding oak and ash) and natural rot resistance. For manufacturing enterprises, the choice between edged and unedged material is based on the specific end product and the capabilities of the machinery.

Edged Acacia Board

This material has undergone a full cycle of primary processing with bark and wane removal. It ensures maximum working time optimisation. The edged board features clear geometry, allowing you to proceed immediately to calibration, glueing into panels, or profiling. It is suitable for manufacturing solid floor boards, parquet, decking, furniture facades, and mouldings.

Advantage: The highest yield coefficient of finished products.

Unedged Acacia Board

Timber with preserved natural edges (with or without bark) is characterised by a lower cost per cubic metre and the possibility of custom cutting for non-standard curved details. It is the optimal raw material for workshops producing “live edge” items.

Applications: Slab tables, rustic furniture, decorative interior elements.

Acacia features a contrasting light sapwood and dark heartwood. In unedged boards, this transition is a key aesthetic element that designers strive to preserve.

Technical Nuances When Processing Acacia Boards

Regardless of the cut type, working with acacia requires adherence to specific conditions:

  1. Drying. Chamber drying to 8–10% moisture content is critical. Acacia is prone to warping and internal stresses, so steaming is often applied before drying.
  2. Tools. Due to the high density and viscosity of the wood, carbide-tipped saws and cutters are recommended to avoid burning the material and rapid wear of cutting edges.
  3. Sanding. Acacia wood is difficult to sand but polishes to a mirror shine.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How does acacia timber differ from oak?

Acacia is significantly harder and more wear-resistant than oak (Brinell hardness ~7.1 vs ~3.7 for oak). The solid wood has a higher density, a specific olive-golden colour, and superior natural resistance to moisture and rot.

Can an acacia board be used for outdoor work?

Yes, it is one of the species suitable for exterior applications. Acacia is appropriate for terraces, garden furniture, and fencing.

How to find out how many cubic metres are in one edged acacia board?

Convert all board dimensions (thickness, width, length) into metres and multiply them.

How to calculate the price of an acacia board per piece?

Multiply the volume of one board (in cubic metres) by the current price per cubic metre. Formula: (Thickness × Width × Length) × Price per m³.

How is the volume of unedged acacia board calculated?

Length and thickness are measured as usual. Width is calculated as the arithmetic mean: measure the width of the narrowest and widest parts of the face (excluding bark) and divide by 2.

Is it difficult to process acacia board?

Very sharp tools are required for sawing and milling. The wood is hard to sand but polishes well to a mirror shine.

What is the weight of a dry acacia board?

It is a heavy timber. One cubic metre of dry acacia (10–12% moisture) weighs approximately 750–800 kg, which is heavier than oak or ash.

What does «2nd Grade» mean for Acacia?

This is a board that retains strength but has visual defects: large knots, colour variations (sapwood), and possible small cracks. Such material is ideal for Loft and Rustic styles.

Is it necessary to protect acacia with oils or varnish?

Although acacia is rot-resistant, the surface should be coated with oils (especially decking oil for exterior use) or furniture varnish to preserve colour and stability.
